Accuses Congress Chief of Home Attack

In a shocking incident, Chennai-based YouTuber Savukku Shankar alleged that his home was attacked by a mob dressed as sanitary workers. The attack, which involved dumping buckets of filth and human faeces on his property, is believed to be a retaliation for his recent expose of a scam involving the Tamil Nadu Congress. Shankar, known for his critical views on the DMK government, claimed that the attack was orchestrated by the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president, K Selvaperunthagai, over his video exposing a scam in the delivery of sewage machines to sanitary workers.

Shankar’s video highlighted how the Tamil Nadu Congress allegedly benefited from a scheme meant for sanitation workers. He claimed that around 130 people, who were benaamis and members of the party under the SC/ST wing, were involved in the scam. The YouTuber stated that despite informing the police immediately after the attack, no First Information Report (FIR) was filed even after 24 hours. The case has since been transferred to the Crime Branch-CID, but Shankar expressed concerns about the investigation’s direction without an FIR.

The attack on Shankar’s home was not only violent but also involved threats to his family. His 70-year-old mother was alone at home when the incident occurred, and the intruders allegedly threatened her, stating that the house would have been burnt if Shankar had been present. The incident has sparked outrage, with many criticizing the law and order situation in Tamil Nadu. The BJP has condemned the attack, labeling it an attempt to silence critics and undermine media freedom.

Background and Reactions

Savukku Shankar is a prominent figure in Tamil Nadu, known for his outspoken views against the DMK government. His videos often focus on exposing corruption and scandals, which have made him a target for political backlash. The recent attack has been seen as a reflection of the deteriorating law and order situation in the state, with many questioning the government’s role in protecting critics and journalists.

The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president has denied any involvement in the attack, calling Shankar’s allegations a “hidden agenda.” However, the lack of immediate police action and the delay in filing an FIR have raised suspicions about the government’s response to the incident. The case’s transfer to the CBCID has been welcomed, but concerns remain about the effectiveness of the investigation without a formal FIR.

Implications and Future

The attack on Savukku Shankar’s home highlights the challenges faced by critics and journalists in India, particularly in regions where political tensions are high. The incident has sparked debates about media freedom and the safety of those who speak out against corruption. As the investigation unfolds, many are watching to see how the authorities will handle the case and whether justice will be served.

The broader implications of such attacks extend beyond individual cases, affecting the overall climate of free speech and political dissent. In a democracy, the ability to criticize and expose wrongdoing is crucial, and incidents like these undermine the foundations of democratic discourse.

What do you think is the most effective way to ensure the safety of journalists and critics who expose corruption, and how can governments balance political interests with the need to protect free speech?
