The Punjab government conducted extensive raids, resulting in the arrest of 63 drug smugglers and highlighting efforts to combat drug trafficking in the state.
Punjab’s Ongoing Battle Against Drug Trafficking
Punjab has been at the forefront of a relentless battle against drug trafficking, with the state government and police force working tirelessly to eradicate this menace. Recent raids conducted across the state have resulted in significant arrests and seizures, underscoring the government’s commitment to making Punjab drug-free.
In one of the most extensive operations, the Punjab Police raided 580 locations, leading to the arrest of 110 drug smugglers. This operation was part of an ongoing anti-drugs drive launched on February 26, which has seen the arrest of over 1,540 smugglers so far. The police have recovered substantial quantities of drugs, including 2.8 kg of heroin, 500 gm of opium, and 10,904 intoxicating tablets/injections, along with ₹2.88 lakh in drug money.
The state government has adopted a three-pronged strategy—enforcement, deaddiction, and prevention—to combat drug trafficking effectively. This strategy involves not only cracking down on drug smugglers but also providing rehabilitation services to those affected by drug addiction. The police have also conducted awareness campaigns to prevent drug use among the youth and other vulnerable groups.

Recent Raids and Arrests
In another significant operation, the Punjab Police arrested 114 drug smugglers in raids at 557 locations across the state. This operation resulted in the recovery of 945 grams of heroin, 43 kg of poppy husk, 3,098 intoxicant tablets/pills/injections, and ₹76,310 in drug money. With these arrests, the total number of drug smugglers arrested reached 1,936.
Additionally, on March 13, the police arrested 118 drug smugglers in raids at 543 locations. This operation was part of the ongoing anti-drug drive, during which the police recovered 994 grams of heroin, 4,633 intoxicant tablets or injections, and ₹1.47 lakh in cash.
Community Involvement and Government Initiatives
The fight against drugs in Punjab has also seen significant community involvement. Over 3,000 panchayats in the state have passed resolutions against drugs, turning the “Yudh Nashian Virudh” campaign into a mass movement. This widespread support from local communities is crucial in the state’s efforts to become drug-free.
The Punjab government has constituted a five-member Cabinet Sub-Committee, led by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, to monitor the war against drugs. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has set a deadline of three months to make Punjab a drug-free state, emphasizing the urgency and importance of this mission.
As Punjab continues its battle against drug trafficking, the question remains: What role do you think community involvement should play in supporting government initiatives to combat drug trafficking, and how can this collaboration be strengthened?
