Similar to how the movie characters set out for a life-changing road trip across Spain, tourists can travel to India and experience Indian film, learning about the real-life magic behind some of Bollywood and Hollywood’s most well-known productions. I love movies and how they show us new places. But I never really understood why people visit movie locations until I went to Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur.
This big fort has been in many famous movies, including “The Dark Knight Rises” with Batman! As I walked inside, it felt like I was stepping into a movie set. There were so many twisting paths and beautiful courtyards. Each room I entered was more amazing than the last. I kept thinking, “Wow, Batman was here!”The fort has a museum too, and it’s full of cool stuff. I saw fancy chairs that kings used to ride in, called palanquins. There were also old weapons and tiny, detailed paintings. All these things showed how rich and powerful the rulers of Rajasthan were. Being there made movies come alive for me. I could imagine actors in costume running through the same halls I was walking in. My trip to the fort wasn’t just a normal visit. It felt like I was in a movie myself! I learned that movie places aren’t just pretty backgrounds. They’re real spots with their own stories.

Mumbai: Where Dreams Are Made
I was very excited as I got on my plane to Mumbai. I had always wanted to visit India and see the places where Bollywood movies are made. I loved watching these colorful and exciting Indian movies since I was a kid. I had a map and a list of famous movie spots I wanted to visit. I thought I was just going to see some cool movie locations, but this trip ended up being much more. It helped me learn about myself and understand Indian culture in a way that really changed me.
The city was noisy, colorful, and full of people. I went to Colaba, a busy area with many movies. The streets were narrow and filled with sellers, small taxis, and food smells. I found myself at the famous Leopold Cafe, instantly recognizing it from “Shantaram” and “Slumdog Millionaire.” While enjoying a hot cup of chai, I observed the passing scenery and sensed the energy of the city that has served as a source of inspiration for numerous filmmakers. I visited Film City, the location of Bollywood film production, the following day. I couldn’t walk inside, but I did hear stories about great actors and films. By luck, I saw a real movie being made on a nearby street, and for a moment, I felt like I had stepped into a Bollywood movie myself.
Udaipur: A Royal Affair
After busy Mumbai, I went to peaceful Udaipur, known as the “City of Lakes,” which is a stunning jewel in India’s Rajasthan state. The majestic City Palace, a huge structure that celebrates the richness of Rajasthan’s royal history, is the city’s crown gem. It’s a stunning blend of Rajasthani and Mughal architectural styles that has been in place for almost 400 years.
I visited Lake Pichola and the beautiful Lake Palace Hotel in the water and understood why many movies are made here. From there I took a boat ride as James Bond did in the movie”Octopussy,” The white marble palace seemed to float on the water, its reflection creating a dreamlike symmetry. I explored the City Palace for days. It had many courtyards, shiny halls, and hidden paths.
At sunset, I sat on the palace’s balcony. The view of the lake and hills was so beautiful, it looked like a movie scene. I almost thought a film crew might show up and start filming.
Ladakh: High-Altitude Cinema
My last stop was Ladakh, a place high up in the mountains. It’s very different from Mumbai and Udaipur – dry, with big open spaces and tall mountains. I visited Pangong Lake, where the most famous movie was made “3 Idiots.” The lake was huge and very blue, and it was so quiet there, making me feel calm and thoughtful. I imagined the whole movie just standing in front of the lake.
I stayed in a small village in Ladakh. The people there were amicable and welcoming. Their traditional homes, built of mud bricks, seemed to grow organically from the rocky terrain. But even in this far-off part of India, modernism had made its mark. I was shocked to see young monks showing me Ladakh-shot movie snippets on their cell phones. It was a wonderful blend of the ancient and the modern, a reminder that cinema brings us all together, even in the most unexpected locations. My trip to Ladakh taught me a lot about India’s diversity. I saw how different parts of the country can be, from the busy, crowded streets of Mumbai to the quiet, open spaces of Ladakh’s mountains. Each place had its own unique story to tell, both in real life and in the movies. I learned that India isn’t just one thing, but a mix of many different cultures, landscapes, and ways of life
This trip showed me how movies connect people all over India. Whether it’s in a big city or a small mountain village, films are a part of life. They bring a bit of magic and excitement to every place, no matter how far away it is.
Reflecting on India’s Cultural Richness
As I finished my trip, I realized India had given me more than just a look at famous movie places. Each spot I visited was special in its way, kind of like different characters in a big movie. Every place had its own story to tell. I had seen busy cities and quiet mountains. I had met all kinds of people and tried new foods. I had walked where movie stars had walked and seen things I’d only seen in films before.
This trip wasn’t just about seeing movie locations. It was about understanding India better – its many different faces and stories. I left feeling like I had been part of a big, exciting movie myself. And just like after watching a really good film, I knew I would be thinking about this adventure for a long time. I came looking for the India of the movies but instead found a country that was more lively, nuanced, and beautiful than any film could depict. And isn’t that the point of both excellent travel and film? allowing us to see our world freshly and opening our eyes to new ones.
This trip taught me to appreciate Indian culture’s depth and complexity, where the past and present mix in perfect harmony, resulting in a dynamic and ever-changing cultural landscape.
